Does WhatsApp compress wedding photos?
Yes: in Standard quality WhatsApp sends a smaller photo, and even HD is not the original file; only sending as a Document keeps the original. To collect originals without asking every guest, use a QR code gallery: Eventphoto.io stores each photo as sent, free for 20 photos per guest or $19.99 (£15.99 in the UK) once.
What it costs
- Free: 20 photos per guest, kept 14 days from when you create the event
- Paid: $19.99 (£15.99 in the UK) per event for unlimited photos and videos per guest, kept up to 12 months
- One-time payment. No subscription and no fee per guest.
What is the difference between Standard and HD?
In WhatsApp’s own words: “Standard quality photos use less data and are sent faster than HD quality photos.” “HD quality photos are clearer than Standard quality photos, but use more data and take longer to send.” The sender picks one per photo. HD can be made the default for what you send, under Settings, Storage and data, Media upload quality.
What HD keeps was measured by the press, not by WhatsApp. In 9to5Mac’s test, Standard quality cut an iPhone photo to 960×1280 pixels and HD kept the original 3024×4032, but “there’s still some compression even when sending an image with the HD option turned on”. So HD is much better than Standard for a wedding photo, but it is still not the file the guest’s phone took. The internet connection affects the quality of what is sent and received, even when it is sent in HD.
How do guests send the original file?
As a document instead of a photo. Among the ways to send is Document, and a document may be up to 2 GB. On an iPhone, as BGR describes it:
- In Photos, share the photo to Files and save it there.
- In the WhatsApp chat, tap + and choose Document.
- Find the photo in Files, open it and send it.
- The recipient taps the document and chooses Save Image to keep the original.
It works, and it is a lot to ask of a wedding guest: the photo shows in the chat as a file, not a picture, and each one has to be saved by hand on the other side.
Can a compressed photo be fixed afterward?
No. A photo already sent cannot be improved afterwards; the sender can only send it again in HD. The original is still on the guest’s phone, so the fix is to ask for it again, the right way, before the camera roll is cleared.

Why is a group chat a poor place to collect wedding photos?
Quality is one reason. The other is that the photos end up in a thread, not in one place: they scroll away under the congratulations, there is no way to download the lot, and guests who are not in the group never send anything. A chat is good for saying the photos are ready. It is not where they should live.
How do I get the guests’ photos at full quality?
Ask guests to upload from the camera roll to a page that keeps the original. With Eventphoto.io you print one QR code for the tables, guests scan it with the phone camera, type the PIN and a first name, and pick their photos in the browser, with no app and no account. The phone sends each original file straight to storage, and nothing is shrunk or re-encoded on the way; iPhone HEIC photos work too. Everything ends up in one private gallery for your event.
Afterward you tap Download all on the host page and get a link to one ZIP by email, usually within a few minutes, with the photos as the phones sent them. The free plan takes 20 photos per guest, up to 10 MB each, for 14 days; the paid plan is $19.99 (£15.99 in the UK) once for unlimited photos and videos per guest, videos up to 200 MB, and 12 months. The limits: guests need a connection to upload, and when the event expires every file is deleted, so download first. More: how to collect wedding photos from guests.
WhatsApp photo quality questions
Is WhatsApp HD the original photo?
Not quite. WhatsApp says HD photos are clearer than Standard ones but use more data. 9to5Mac’s test found HD kept an iPhone photo’s full resolution with some compression still applied. Only a photo sent as a document travels as the original file.
Can I get the full-quality photo from a guest who already sent it on WhatsApp?
Not from the chat. WhatsApp says a photo already sent cannot be improved; the guest has to send it again in HD or as a document, or upload the original from the camera roll somewhere that keeps it.
Does WhatsApp compress videos too?
WhatsApp’s HD article covers photos and videos, and it says the connection affects the quality of what is sent even in HD. For a speech or a first dance, ask for the original file, not the chat version.
Is iMessage better than WhatsApp for wedding photos?
Between iPhones, Apple sends high-resolution photos over iMessage. As soon as an Android guest is in the group, the thread falls back to SMS/MMS or RCS, and Apple does not describe those photos as high resolution. Mixed groups get the weakest route.
What is the easiest way to collect full-quality wedding photos?
A QR code on the tables that opens an upload page in the browser. Each photo is stored as the phone sent it, up to 10 MB, and the host downloads them all as one ZIP. With Eventphoto.io it is free for 20 photos per guest, or $19.99 (£15.99 in the UK) once with video.
